Define the Theory

This theory defines the leader as one who can share the vision with the masses and get them to follow the vision the leader is promoting.  The leader, being a visionary, is hoping to get followers able to implement and sustain the vision to achieve the desired outcome.  This type of leader is a "Big Picture" type of person and often struggles with the details.  The Transformational leader is highly visible and will model the desired behaviors needed to reach their goals.  They walk the talk, so to speak.

What are the outcomes?  When might this leadership style be used?

This leadership style can generate great enthusiasm for a goal which often can lead to achieving the goal.  The enthusiasm will often spread to the followers thus creating a perpetual motion driving to the success of the initiative.  There are risks, however, that the motion can be going in the wrong direction thus taking the organization toa place other than where it wants to go.

This leadership style is best suited for situations where great change is necessary.  For example, new initiatives, turning a crisis situation around, bringing about monumental change inthe organization and so on.  This style is best suited for situations where continual motivation is required.

What are the critical skills an administrator would need to be able to demonstrate this leadership style?

Self-Mastery

Influence

Communication

Integrity

Action-oriented

Able to share the vision

Unswerving Commitment to the goal

Driven to succeed

Motivational

Able to build relationships
