Collective Knowledge about Transformational Leadership

Define the Theory

A leadership theory brought forth by James McGregor Burns 1978. A transformational leader inspires others to follow and leads toward a "big" goal. The transformatinal leader keeps in mind and not really concerned by the means. They are charasmatic and tied to the end. Leaders express genuine concern for followers.

What are the outcomes?  When might this leadership style be used?

Best used and accepted when "big" change is needed, moral is down and in a time of uncertainty and fear. Can also be used to maintain the status quo.  Lee Iaccoa is an example.

What are the critical skills an administrator would need to be able to demonstrate this leadership style?

  • The transformatinal leader keeps big goal in mind and not really concerned by the means.
  • They are charasmatic and tied to the end, persuasive, harness emotion, filled with energy, enthusiastic.
  • These leaders have a strong sense of conviction to the cause. Good communicators.
  • They truly believe they are right, garner trust. Participatory decision making.
