Define the Theory

This theory is concerned with "servant first" as opposed to "leader first".  Primary motivation for this is to help others and create improvement in followers of the leader.  A general consideration is to be the steward of resources.

What are the outcomes?  When might this leadership style be used?

The goal is to help other to improve so the "followers" of the servant leader would experience personal or professional growth.  During this process they would learn how to become servant leaders in their positions.

This leadership style could be used when the assumption is given that the followers want to change.  A primary focus for this leadership style is when a high priority is placed on helping those less fortunate.  One example might be contract negotiations during tight financial times.

What are the critical skills an administrator would need to be able to demonstrate this leadership style?

Being an active listener is an important skill as well as a willingness to be a steward or servant.  Collaborative style with focus on the betterment of the team and the disadvantaged through modelling and service are significant to this style.  Recognition of when this style could be appropriate is important for the leader.  "Know when to push and when to pull"
