Define the Theory

Leadership style is dependent on the situation.  Key components of the situation depend on follower competency and motivation.  Leader role is on a continuum of direct vs. less direct and relationship oriented vs. less relationship oriented.

Who are the proponents?  Hersey and Blanchard.

What are the outcomes?  When might this leadership style be used?

Outcomes:

  • Forces the leader to identify the strengths and weaknesses of  individual staff members.
  • The tasks get completed.

 When it could be used:

  • When choosing teacher mentors.
  • When there are specific tasks that must be completed.

What are the critical skills an administrator would need to be able to demonstrate this leadership style?

  • Flexibility
  • Adaptability
  • Ability to assess staff members' competency and motivation
