Instructional Leadership

* A situational leader would need to know and understand his/her staff and their learning styles (adult learning).

* A situational leader needs to have a firm knowledge of curriculum and instruction and know where he/she is going.

* A situational leader needs to have clear expectations and communicate those to various stakeholders.

* A situational leader needs to monitor on an ongoing basis to ensure the quality of work is maintained and adapt accordingly.

Shared Leadership

 * This is the essence of situational leadership.

* The situational leader needs to ensure that a collaborative decision making process is in place.

* A situational leader needs to create an atmosphere of collaborative inquiry.

* A situational leader needs to understand when it is appropriate to share decision making versus using the "directive" approach.

* A situational leader needs to ensure that the collaborative decision making process is based on data rather than "intuition" or personal preference.

Operational/Resource Management

 * In situations that require additional assistance to the staff, a situational leader must allocate appropriate time and necessary resources.

* A situational leader must balance the opportunity for collaboration with the need for a decision (at some point a decision must be made).

* A situational leader must ensure that the "right people are on the bus." (Having the right people in the right places to get things done)

Interpersonal Relationships

 * A situational leader must develop an atmosphere of trust.

* A situational leader must understand the interpersonal relationships of the staff members.

* A situational leader must have situational awareness.
